IVR: Interactive Voice Response - is a technology where a person can interact with a machine or system by dialing a number and pressing phones number keys.
In a typical VoIP industry, IVR is a technology that is mainly used in calling card business. In calling card business, in order to know his balance or in order to place a call.
Usually, in calling card, if some one want to place a call, he calls a number, and interacts with IVR server as follows
- IVR server sends him a welcome message and ask to insert his PIN (if it is a PIN based authentication system)
- after inserting the PIN, the IVR server tell him his balance (here IVR server communicate with the billing server and collect the information)
- then the IVR server ask him to enter the dialed number (and it can still do some further functions like how many minute he can call etc but depend on the operators choice)
There are mainly 2 types of IVR solutions. And these are as follows
- Bundled with Media Gateway
Usually most of the media gateway has its own IVR. Media Gateway like CISCO or Quintum has its own IVR. You need to configure the IVR server according to your requirement and need to be linked with the billing server.
- IP IVR
IP IVR is a IVR systems hosted on a server. This type of IVR is very useful for calling card, device based calling card, and PC to Phone application. This can be again h323 and SIP based.
